Cyavana’s Water-Vow and the Ethics of Cohabitation (स्नेह-सम्वास-धर्मः)

अन्न पानं च माल्यं च वासांस्याभरणानि च । ब्राह्मण्यैतानि देयानि भर्तु: सा हि गरीयसी,पतिको अन्न, पान, माला, वस्त्र और आभूषण--ये सब वस्तुएँ ब्राह्मणी ही समर्पित करे; क्योंकि वही उसके लिये सब स्त्रियोंसे अधिक गौरवकी अधिकारिणी है

Transliteration

anna-pānaṃ ca mālyaṃ ca vāsāṃsy ābharaṇāni ca | brāhmaṇyaitāni deyāni bhartuḥ sā hi garīyasī ||

Translation

Bhīṣma said: “Food and drink, garlands, garments, and ornaments—these are to be offered by the brāhmaṇī (the Brahmin wife) to her husband; for in this duty she holds the higher place, most worthy of honor.”
