Dāyavibhāga (Inheritance Apportionment) and Household Precedence — Dialogue of Yudhiṣṭhira and Bhīṣma

Bhīṣma said: The girl’s relatives ask for a bride-price only when she is burdened with other unfavourable conditions or qualities. But if the prospective bridegroom is invited and told, “Adorn her and take her as your wife,” and he then provides ornaments for her and marries her, that act is in accordance with dharma.
