Brāhmaṇa-pūjā, Haviḥ-dāna, and the Vāsudeva–Pṛthivī Saṃvāda
Chapter 34
sarvān devān namasyanti ye caika-vedam āśritāḥ | śraddadhānāś ca dāntāś ca durgāṇy atitaranti te ||
Bhīṣma said: Those who bow to all the gods, and who take refuge in the one Veda—endowed with faith and self-restraint—cross over difficult passages and perilous obstacles. The teaching underscores that reverence, scriptural grounding, and disciplined conduct together become a means of safely passing through life’s hardships.
भीष्म उवाच
Reverence toward the divine, reliance on Vedic guidance, and inner discipline (faith and self-control) enable a person to overcome dangers and hardships; ethical steadiness is presented as the practical means of ‘crossing’ life’s difficult passages.
Bhīṣma concludes a didactic point within the Anuśāsana Parva’s discourse on dharma, stating that those who are devout, faithful, and self-restrained—grounded in Vedic authority—successfully pass through perilous situations.
