Aṣṭāvakra’s Visit to Kubera: Hospitality, Temptation, and the Ethics of Restraint (अष्टावक्र-वैश्रवणोपाख्यानम्)

Gālava said: “You will soon see your father at the end of your despair.” Hearing this, I cast off my hopelessness about meeting my father, restrained my mind, and worshipped Mahādeva until I received his vision. Then the Lord said to me: “Child, your father, your mother, and you—all three—shall become free from death. Now enter your home without delay; there you will obtain the sight of your father.” Permitted by Bhagavān Śiva, I returned home, performed a sacrifice, and then saw my father emerging from the sacrificial enclosure, carrying fuel-sticks (samidhā), kuśa grass, and ripe fruits and other offerings that had fallen of themselves from the trees.
