Vāyu said: He is the subduer of foes and yet free from ostentation; the intimate friend of the unpretentious; the One who becomes subject to His devotees, and the One who has the power to bring others under control. He is Time as the Kali age; the Maker of the worlds; the Lord of creatures (Paśupati); the Great Creator who fashions the elements and all creation; and the One who is beyond dependence on food and medicinal herbs.
वायुदेव उवाच
True divine greatness combines absolute sovereignty (creator, lord of beings, controller of all) with freedom from vanity and even a voluntary ‘dependence’ on devotees—showing that humility and devotion are not opposed to power but are its highest expression.
Vāyu is reciting a sequence of epithets—praise-names describing the supreme deity’s qualities—moving from ethical traits (non-ostentation, favor toward the humble, responsiveness to devotees) to cosmic functions (Time as Kali, creation, lordship over beings) and transcendence of bodily needs.
