toraṇas tāraṇo vātaḥ paridhī patikhecaraḥ | saṃyogo vardhano vṛddho ativṛddho guṇādhikaḥ ||

Vāyu-deva said: He is Mahāketu, bearing a great banner that is Dharma itself; Mahādhātu, of vast substance like gold; Naikasānucara, who roams upon the many peaks of Mount Meru; Cala, whom none can seize; Āvedanīya, worthy to be entreated; Ādeśa, the giver of commands; and Sarvagandhasukhāvaha, who bestows the delight of all objects, such as fragrance and the rest. He is Toraṇa, the gate of liberation; Tāraṇa, who ferries beings across; Vāta, the very Wind; Paridhi, the encircling boundary of the cosmos; and Patikhecara, lord of all who move through the sky. He is Saṃyoga, the union that becomes the cause of increase; Vardhana, the increaser Himself; Vṛddha, mature and exalted in virtues; Ativṛddha, most ancient beyond measure; and Guṇādhika, surpassing all in qualities such as knowledge and sovereignty.

Educational Q&A

The verse praises the Supreme as both cosmic principle and moral refuge: He is the ‘gate’ to liberation and the ‘deliverer’ who carries beings across saṃsāra, while also being the sustaining force behind growth, order, and excellence in virtues.

Vāyu-deva continues a litany of divine names/epithets, describing the deity through metaphors of wind, cosmic boundary, lordship over sky-moving beings, and as the cause of increase and the most ancient, supreme in qualities.
