Bhīṣma’s Yogic Departure, Royal Cremation, and Gaṅgā’s Lament (भीष्मस्य योगयुक्त्या देहत्यागः, पितृमेधः, गङ्गाविलापः)

जन्म चैव प्रसूतिश्व॒ यच्चान्यत्‌ कारणं विभो । वयं तु बहुचापल्यादशक्ता गुह्मधारणे,'प्रभो! आपका जो यह अवतार अर्थात्‌ मानव-शरीरमें जन्म हुआ है तथा जो इसका गुप्त कारण है, यह सब तथा अन्य बातें आपसे छिपी नहीं हैं। हमलोग तो अपनी अत्यन्त चपलताके कारण इस गूढ़ विषयको अपने मनमें ही छिपाये रखनेमें असमर्थ हो गये हैं

janma caiva prasūtiś ca yac cānyat kāraṇaṁ vibho | vayaṁ tu bahu-cāpalyād aśaktā guhya-dhāraṇe ||

Nārada said: “O Lord, neither Your birth in a human body nor the hidden cause behind it—nor anything else—can be concealed from You. But we, being exceedingly fickle by nature, have proved unable to keep this profound matter guarded within ourselves.”
