Śrī Maheśvara said: “Freed from conjugal association, and not entangled in any kind of mixture or moral confusion, the sages—released from all sins—wander in the forest. Thus the forest-dweller’s discipline is marked by restraint, purity of conduct, and withdrawal from household bonds.”
श्रीमहेश्वर उवाच
The verse praises the vānaprastha/ascetic ideal: one should withdraw from conjugal attachment, avoid morally confusing or improper mixtures (saṅkara), and live with purity and restraint so that one’s life becomes free from sin.
Maheśvara is describing the conduct of forest-dwelling sages: detached from household life and purified of wrongdoing, they live by wandering in the forest, embodying disciplined renunciation.
