Mahādeva said: “For the forest-dwelling ascetic (vānaprastha), the proper discipline is this: to be devoted to the Aṣṭamī-sacrifice (the Aṣṭakā rite performed on the eighth lunar day), to observe the Cāturmāsya seasonal vows, and to regularly perform the rites beginning with the Paurṇamāsa offerings, along with the daily obligatory sacrifices. In this way, steadiness in dharma and regulated worship becomes the ethical foundation of the vānaprastha’s life.”
