Praise of the ‘Mental Tīrtha’ and the Marks of Purity
lomnāṁ pramāṇena samaṁ brahmaloke mahīyate |
Bhishma says: One is honoured in Brahmaloka for a span measured by the number of hairs (lomāni)—i.e., for as many years as there are hairs in the specified collection of hides—indicating an extraordinarily long, merit-born reward in the highest heavenly realm.
The verse emphasizes that righteous merit yields immense, proportionate reward—so vast it is expressed through an almost uncountable measure (the number of hairs), underscoring the grandeur of dharmic फल (result) in Brahmaloka.
In Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma continues instructing Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and the fruits of virtuous acts; here he describes the magnitude of honour and duration of reward attained in Brahmaloka.
