Anuśāsana-parva 108
न चैकेन परिव्रज्यं न गन्तव्यं तथा निशि । अनागतायां संध्यायां पश्चिमायां गृहे वसेत्,अकेले परदेश जाना और रातमें यात्रा करना मना है। यदि किसी कामके लिये बाहर जाय तो संध्या होनेके पहले ही घर लौट आना चाहिये
na caikena parivrajyaṁ na gantavyaṁ tathā niśi | anāgatāyāṁ sandhyāyāṁ paścimāyāṁ gṛhe vaset ||
Bhishma said: One should not wander about alone, nor should one travel at night. Before the evening twilight arrives—especially as the western dusk approaches—one should remain at home. The teaching underscores prudent conduct: avoid solitary journeys and nighttime travel, and return home before dusk for safety and propriety.
भीष्म उवाच
Practice prudent conduct: do not roam alone, avoid traveling at night, and return home before evening twilight. It frames safety and propriety as part of dharma (right conduct).
In the Anushasana Parva, Bhishma is instructing Yudhishthira on dharma and proper behavior. Here he gives a practical rule of conduct concerning travel and timing—counsel meant to prevent danger and uphold disciplined living.
