Praise of Ācāra as the Basis of Longevity, Fame, and Prosperity

parvakāleṣu sarveṣu brahmacārī sadā bhavet | samānam ekapātre tu bhuñjennānnaṃ janeśvara |

Bhīṣma said: “At every sacred festival time one should always remain a brahmacārin—after bathing and becoming pure, wearing clean garments and ornaments, and observing a fast. O lord of men, one should not eat food together with another from the same vessel. One should not eat food rendered impure by the touch of a menstruating woman, nor consume items from which the essence has already been extracted. And one should not eat without first giving to a person who looks longingly at the food.”

Educational Q&A

Bhīṣma teaches disciplined conduct during sacred observance days: maintain brahmacarya, practice cleanliness and fasting, avoid improper modes of eating that compromise purity or propriety, and uphold compassion by giving to the needy before eating oneself.

In the Anuśāsana Parva’s dharma-instruction setting, Bhīṣma continues advising the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) on proper religious and ethical conduct, here focusing on festival-time restraints and food-related rules that reinforce self-control and social responsibility.
