Bhīṣma said: “O lord of men, one should never eat food that has been defiled by the touch of a menstruating woman. Likewise, one should not consume items whose essence has already been extracted. And one should not eat while another looks on with longing at the food, without first giving to that person.”

Bhishma teaches disciplined and compassionate conduct around food: avoid impure or ethically compromised food, and do not eat selfishly when someone nearby is yearning—first share or give.
In Anushasana Parva, Bhishma instructs Yudhishthira on dharma and proper conduct. Here he lays down practical rules of eating that combine notions of ritual purity with social responsibility and generosity.
