Bhishma teaches rules of personal discipline regarding clothing: one should not wear garments worn by another, nor those frayed and torn at the hem. One should keep separate garments for different contexts—one for sleeping, one for moving about in public streets, and another reserved for the worship of the gods. The ethical point is cleanliness, propriety, and reverence: what is used for ordinary public activity should not be used for sacred ritual service.
