Niyoga for Kuru Succession

Vaiśampāyana said: “This son of yours has been born endowed with the valor of those Vasus, O delight of the Kuru line. There is no doubt that this child will surpass all other people in strength and heroism. This child is, as it were, the successive abode of the Vasus, established in their very presence—know him to be born through me. Recognize this son as ‘Gaṅgādatta’ (the gift of Gaṅgā).”
The passage frames extraordinary power as a trust tied to lineage and divine ordinance: a child’s prowess is presented not as mere personal achievement but as the result of higher agencies (the Vasus) and rightful recognition (naming and acceptance), reinforcing responsibility within dharma and kingship.
The speaker announces that the king’s newborn son is endowed with the collective valor of the Vasus and will surpass others in strength. The child is identified as born through Gaṅgā and is to be recognized and named ‘Gaṅgādatta,’ emphasizing his divine-linked origin and destined greatness.
