अध्याय ९५: चित्राङ्गदस्य गन्धर्वेण सह संग्रामः तथा विचित्रवीर्यस्य राज्याभिषेकः
Chitrāṅgada’s duel with the Gandharva and Vicitravīrya’s consecration
राजल्वे तं प्रजा: सर्वा धर्मज्ञ इति वव्रिरे । तस्य नाम्नाभिविख्यातं॑ पृथिव्यां कुरुजाज्लम्,कुरुको धर्मज्ञ मानकर सम्पूर्ण प्रजावर्गके लोगोंने स्वयं उनका राजाके पदपर वरण किया। उन्हींके नामसे पृथ्वीपर कुरुजांगलदेश प्रसिद्ध हुआ
rājalve taṃ prajāḥ sarvā dharmajña iti vavṛre | tasya nāmnābhivikhyātaṃ pṛthivyāṃ kurujāṅgalam ||
All the subjects chose him as their king, acclaiming him as one who knew and upheld dharma. From his very name, the region on earth came to be widely known as Kurujāṅgala—showing how a ruler’s righteousness can shape the identity and memory of a land.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
A ruler’s authority is ethically grounded in dharma and affirmed by the people; when a king is recognized as dharmajña, his personal virtue becomes a source of social order and lasting renown.
The people collectively select a king praised as a knower of dharma, and the land becomes famous by association with his name, being known as Kurujāṅgala.
