Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing that a boy had been born, Devayānī—she of the pure smile—was seized by sorrow and began to brood, directing her troubled thoughts toward Śarmiṣṭhā, O Bhārata.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights how news that touches honor, trust, and social obligation can trigger inner turmoil; it implicitly warns that unchecked sorrow and resentment can become the seed of larger ethical and familial conflict.
Devayānī hears that a boy has been born (in the context of the Devayānī–Śarmiṣṭhā–Yayāti episode) and, distressed, begins brooding with her thoughts fixed on Śarmiṣṭhā, foreshadowing confrontation and escalation.
