Sauti said: Having assented—“So be it”—and carrying out the command, the mighty lord Śeṣa, elder brother of the foremost of serpents, entered the cleft of the earth and took his station there. Encompassing on every side this Earth-goddess, ringed by the ocean, he bore her upon his head—thereby establishing her steadiness and order.
शेष उवाच
The verse highlights dharma as faithful execution of a rightful command and the sustaining responsibility of the powerful: Śeṣa upholds the world not by conquest but by steady support, embodying service that preserves cosmic order.
Sauti narrates that Śeṣa, obeying the divine instruction, enters a fissure in the earth and positions himself beneath it, encircling the ocean-bounded Earth-goddess and bearing her upon his head so that the earth becomes stable.
