Garuḍa–Śakra Saṃvāda and the Retrieval of Amṛta
Bṛhaspatir uvāca: tavāparādhād devendra pramādāc ca śatakrato | tapasā vālakhilyānāṃ maharṣīṇāṃ mahātmanām |
Bṛhaspati said: “O Indra, lord of the gods, O Śatakratu—because of your own offense and negligence, and by the power of the austerities of the great-souled Vālakhilya seers, Kaśyapa and Vinatā’s son, Garuḍa, the king of birds, are coming to seize the nectar of immortality. He is exceedingly mighty and can assume forms at will.”
Negligence and wrongdoing (pramāda and aparādha) bring consequences even to the powerful; the moral force of tapas and the authority of sages can overturn divine security and compel accountability.
Bṛhaspati alerts Indra that, due to Indra’s fault and the ascetic power of the Vālakhilya seers, Kaśyapa and Garuḍa (son of Vinatā) are approaching to take amṛta; Garuḍa is described as immensely strong and able to change form at will.
