समन्तपञ्चक-आख्यानम् तथा अक्षौहिणी-प्रमाणनिर्णयः

Samantapañcaka Narrative and the Measure of an Akṣauhiṇī

Harivaṁśas tataḥ parva purāṇaṁ khila-saṁjñitam; Viṣṇu-parvaṁ śiśoś ca caryā Viṣṇoḥ, Kaṁsa-vadhas tathā.

Thereafter comes the Harivaṁśa section, a Purāṇa regarded as a ‘khila’ (supplement/appendix). In it are contained the Viṣṇu-parvan, the childhood deeds of Viṣṇu (Kṛṣṇa), and likewise the slaying of Kaṁsa—thereby extending the epic’s lineage narrative into a devotional and moral account of divine protection and the downfall of tyranny.

Educational Q&A

The verse frames the Harivaṁśa as a supplementary Purāṇic continuation that highlights Viṣṇu/Kṛṣṇa’s life and deeds, implying a moral arc: divine power supports dharma, nurtures the righteous (even through playful childhood līlā), and removes oppressive rule (symbolized by Kaṁsa’s death).

The speaker is listing the contents that follow: after the main Mahābhārata divisions, the Harivaṁśa is introduced as an appendix-like Purāṇa, containing the Viṣṇu-parvan, accounts of Kṛṣṇa’s childhood activities, and the episode of Kaṁsa’s slaying.
