Educational Q&A

The verse maps the ethical curriculum of the Śānti Parva: first, normative public ethics through rājadharma (ideal governance and justice); second, situational ethics through āpaddharma (what may be permitted or required under emergency); and finally, the highest aim through mokṣadharma (the path toward liberation).

In the outline of the Mahābhārata’s contents, the text transitions to describe the Śānti Parva and identifies its major internal divisions—teachings on royal duty, emergency conduct, and liberation—signaling a move from war’s aftermath to sustained instruction on dharma and inner peace.
