Hiḍimba’s Approach and Hiḍimbā’s Warning to Bhīmasena
dharmaṁ vicarataḥ pīḍā sāpi dvābhyāṁ niyacchati | arthaṁ cāpy arthalubdhasya kāmaṁ cātipravartinaḥ ||
Kanika said: Even for one who walks the path of dharma, suffering arises and is checked—indeed obstructed—by the other two aims, artha and kāma. Likewise, for the man greedy for wealth, his pursuit of artha is hindered by the pains born of dharma and kāma; and for the one excessively given to enjoyment, his pursuit of kāma is hindered by the pains born of dharma and artha. Thus each human aim, when pursued in isolation or excess, becomes a source of friction and restraint through the pressure of the remaining aims.
The verse highlights the mutual tension among the three aims—dharma, artha, and kāma. When a person pursues one aim, the pressures and pains generated by the other two naturally restrain or obstruct that pursuit; therefore, wise living requires balance and self-regulation rather than single-minded excess.
Kanika is speaking as an adviser, presenting a pragmatic analysis of human motivations. He explains how the pursuit of righteousness, wealth, or pleasure is each checked by the competing demands of the other aims, framing a counsel about strategy and conduct in worldly life.
