Hiḍimba’s Approach and Hiḍimbā’s Warning to Bhīmasena (हिडिम्बागमनम् / हिडिम्बा-भयवचनम्)

Kaṇika said: “In the pursuit of the three aims of life—dharma, artha, and kāma—there arise three kinds of afflictions and also a corresponding chain of consequences. The consequences should be understood as auspicious and worth choosing, but the afflictions should be carefully avoided.”

Educational Q&A

Pursue dharma, artha, and kāma in a way that yields their proper beneficial outcomes (anubandhas), while deliberately avoiding the pains/obstacles (pīḍās) that arise when these aims are followed in a harmful, imbalanced, or mutually obstructive manner.

Kaṇika is giving counsel framed as practical-ethical instruction: he comments on the three aims of life and warns that their pursuit brings both desirable results and troublesome impediments, urging the listener to choose the former and avoid the latter.
