Ādi-parva Adhyāya 132 — Duryodhana’s Instructions to Purocana at Vāraṇāvata

न चैनमभ्यजानंस्ते तदा विकृतदर्शनम् | अथीैनं परिपप्रच्छु: को भवान् कस्य वेत्युत,उस समय उसका रूप बदल गया था। पाण्डव उसे पहचान न सके; अतः पूछने लगे --“तुम कौन हो, किसके पुत्र हो?”
na cainam abhyajānans te tadā vikṛtadarśanam | athainaṁ paripapracchuḥ ko bhavān kasya vety uta ||
Vaiśampāyana said: And they did not recognize him then, for his appearance had become altered. Therefore they questioned him closely: “Who are you, and whose son are you?”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
When outward appearance changes, dharma requires careful inquiry and truthful identification; social and moral dealings depend on knowing who one is engaging with and with what intent.
A figure’s form has become altered so the Pāṇḍavas cannot recognize him; they therefore question him directly and respectfully about his identity and lineage: “Who are you, whose son are you?”
