अनुक्रमणिकाध्यायः (Anukramaṇikā Adhyāya) — Invocation, Narrator Frame, and Textual Scope

अथ तेषूपविष्टेषु सर्वेष्वेव तपस्विषु । निर्दिष्टमासनं भेजे विनयाललौमहर्षणि:

atha teṣūpaviṣṭeṣu sarveṣv eva tapasviṣu | nirdiṣṭam āsanaṃ bheje vinayāl lomaharṣaṇiḥ ||

Then, when all those ascetics had taken their seats, Lomaharṣaṇa—out of humility and proper decorum—took the seat that was assigned to him. The scene emphasizes disciplined conduct: even a learned narrator honors the assembly by accepting his place with modesty rather than self-assertion.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights vinaya (humility) and maryādā (proper conduct): even a respected speaker honors the community and its order by accepting the seat assigned, showing that learning and authority should be accompanied by modesty.

In the opening frame of the Mahābhārata, an assembly of ascetics has seated itself; Lomaharṣaṇa (the Sūta narrator) then takes the designated seat, preparing to speak in a manner consistent with the assembly’s discipline and hierarchy.
