(Anukramaṇikā Adhyāya) — Invocation, Narrator Frame, and Textual Scope

yadā droṇo vividhān astramārgān nidarśayan samare citrayodhī | na pāṇḍavān śreṣṭhatarān nihanti tadā nāśaṁse vijayāya sañjaya sañjaya ||

When Droṇa, that wondrous warrior, was displaying in battle the many different courses and applications of weapons, yet did not strike down the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas, then, O Sañjaya, I ceased to hope for victory.

Educational Q&A

Superior skill alone does not guarantee success; when decisive action is withheld—whether from restraint, allegiance, or circumstance—confidence in victory collapses. The verse highlights how outcomes in war depend on intent and resolve as much as prowess.

The speaker observes Droṇa demonstrating many weapon-techniques on the battlefield, yet not killing any of the foremost Pāṇḍavas. Interpreting this as a grave sign, he tells Sañjaya that he has abandoned hope of victory.
