Origin of the Epithet “Nīlakaṇṭha”
iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte pūrva bhāge dvitīye 'nuṣaṅgapāde nīlakaṇṭhanāmotpattikathanaṃ nāma pañcaviṃśatitamo 'dhyāyaḥ ṛṣaya ūcuḥ mahādevasya mahātmyaṃ prabhutvaṃ ca mahātmanaḥ / śrotumicchāmahe samyagaiśvaryaguṇavistaram
Thus, in the Śrī Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa, proclaimed by Vāyu, in the first part, in the second Anuṣaṅga section, is the twenty-fifth chapter called “The Account of the Arising of the Name Nīlakaṇṭha.” The sages said: We wish to hear in full the greatness and sovereignty of the great-souled Mahādeva, and the wide expanse of his divine attributes.
