Kapila’s Devotional Sāṅkhya: Sādhu-saṅga, Bhakti-yoga, and Fearlessness in the Supreme Shelter
tair darśanīyāvayavair udāra- vilāsa-hāsekṣita-vāma-sūktaiḥ hṛtātmano hṛta-prāṇāṁś ca bhaktir anicchato me gatim aṇvīṁ prayuṅkte
Seeing the Lord’s enchanting limbs—His noble pastimes, gentle smile, captivating glance, and hearing His most pleasing words—the pure devotee’s heart is stolen away. His senses withdraw from all other pursuits and become absorbed in bhakti-service; thus, even without desiring it, he attains liberation without separate endeavor.
There are three divisions of devotees: first class, second class and third class. Even the third-class devotees are liberated souls. It is explained in this verse that although they do not have knowledge, simply by seeing the beautiful decoration of the Deity in the temple, the devotees become absorbed in thought of Him and lose all other consciousness. Simply by fixing oneself in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, engaging the senses in the service of the Lord, one is imperceptibly liberated. This is also confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā. Simply by discharging uncontaminated devotional service as prescribed in the scriptures, one becomes equal to Brahman. In Bhagavad-gītā it is said, brahma-bhūyāya kalpate This means that the living entity in his original state is Brahman because he is part and parcel of the Supreme Brahman. But simply because of his forgetfulness of his real nature as an eternal servitor of the Lord, he is overwhelmed and captured by māyā. His forgetfulness of his real constitutional position is māyā. Otherwise he is eternally Brahman.
In this verse, Lord Kapila states that bhakti can draw even the Supreme Lord toward His devotees—captivating His mind and life-breath—showing that pure devotion has the power to ‘bind’ the Lord with love.
Kapila is teaching Devahūti the path of devotion within His Sāṅkhya instructions, emphasizing that loving service is not merely a method—bhakti itself attracts the Lord and grants the highest perfection.
Cultivate sincere devotion through hearing, chanting, and serving with a pleasing, gentle heart and speech—because the essence is loving absorption, not external display; bhakti grows by consistent practice and humility.
