King Parīkṣit said: O great sage, how does this diversity of conditions among living beings arise? Kindly explain it to me.
Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura explains that the different hellish planets within this universe are held slightly above the Garbhodaka Ocean and remain situated there. This chapter describes how all sinful persons go to these hellish planets and how they are punished there by the assistants of Yamarāja. Different individuals with different bodily features enjoy or suffer various reactions according to their past deeds.
This verse introduces Parīkṣit’s inquiry that the world’s diversity arises from causes that Śukadeva will explain—primarily the workings of karma and dharma leading to different results.
Hearing descriptions of cosmic arrangements, Parīkṣit seeks the underlying reason for unequal experiences—happiness, suffering, and various destinations—prompting the explanation of karmic consequences in this chapter.
It encourages ethical living and responsibility: our choices shape future outcomes, so aligning actions with dharma and devotion helps create auspicious results.
