Ikṣvāku Dynasty: Vikukṣi’s Offense, Purañjaya’s Victory, Māndhātā’s Birth, and Saubhari’s Fall and Renunciation
श्रावस्तस्तत्सुतो येन श्रावस्ती निर्ममे पुरी । बृहदश्वस्तु श्रावस्तिस्तत: कुवलयाश्वक: ॥ २१ ॥
śrāvastas tat-suto yena śrāvastī nirmame purī bṛhadaśvas tu śrāvastis tataḥ kuvalayāśvakaḥ
Yuvanāśva’s son was Śrāvasta, who built the town called Śrāvastī Purī. Śrāvasta’s son was Bṛhadaśva, and his son was Kuvalayāśva.
This verse states that a son of King Śrāvasta founded (constructed) the city named Śrāvastī.
He is narrating the royal lineages (vaṁśas) to preserve sacred history and show how dharma and divine arrangement unfold through generations.
They can reflect on impermanence and responsibility—great names, cities, and power pass on—encouraging humility and steadiness in bhakti rather than pride in temporary status.
