Kurukṣetra Pilgrimage: Sages Praise Kṛṣṇa; Vasudeva Inquires on Karma; Viṣṇu-yajña Performed
Mere bodies of water are not the true tīrthas, nor are images of earth and stone the real worshipable deities. They purify only after a long time, but saintly sādhus purify at once, simply by being seen.
Because the Personality of Godhead is absolute — the Supreme Spirit — any representation of Him, whether manifested in stone, paint, sound or any other authorized medium, is nondifferent from His original form in the topmost spiritual planet, Goloka Vṛndāvana. But ordinary demigods are not absolute, being infinitesimal spirit souls, and thus representations of the demigods are not identical with them. Worship of demigods or ritual bathing in a sanctified place gives only limited benefit to those who lack transcendental faith in the Supreme Lord.
This verse says that saintly devotees purify a person immediately simply by their darśana (being seen), whereas pilgrimage waters and stone deities are not the true essence by themselves and tend to purify only over time.
Krishna emphasizes that spiritual purification comes from living devotion and realized holiness—embodied especially in sādhus—rather than from treating external objects as the whole reality without devotion and proper understanding.
Prioritize association with sincere devotees, seek guidance from saintly teachers, and approach temples and pilgrimages with devotion—seeing them as gateways to bhakti rather than as mere rituals or tourism.
