Chapter 54

प्रहस्य भगवान् आह मा स्म भैर् वाम-लोचने ।

विनङ्क्ष्यत्य् अधुनैवैतत् तावकैः शात्रवं बलम् ॥

prahasya bhagavān āha mā sma bhair vāma-locane / vinaṅkṣyaty adhunaivaitat tāvakaiḥ śātravaṃ balam //

Smiling, the Supreme Lord said, “Do not be afraid, O doe-eyed one. This hostile force will be destroyed at once by your own men.”

In this moment of crisis, Śrī Kṛṣṇa reveals a key feature of divine protection: the Lord’s reassurance is not merely emotional comfort but a declaration grounded in His sovereign knowledge of outcomes. By smiling, He signals fearlessness and mastery over the situation, calming Rukmiṇī’s trembling heart as she faces the prospect of being pursued by powerful enemies. The address “vāma-locane” (beautiful, gentle-eyed) highlights the tenderness of the relationship between Bhagavān and His devotee-bride—Bhagavata theology is not only about cosmic control but also intimate care. Kṛṣṇa further says the enemy will be destroyed by “your own men,” indicating that the Lord often accomplishes His will through His devotees and allies (such as Balarāma and the Yādavas). This preserves the honor and agency of His devotees while still keeping Kṛṣṇa as the ultimate protector. For sādhakas, the verse teaches that surrender does not mean passivity; rather, one takes shelter of Kṛṣṇa’s promise and proceeds with faith, knowing that fear is dispelled by remembrance of the Lord’s guardianship and the support He arranges through righteous companions.
