Chapter 54

यावन् न मे हतो बाणैः शयीथा मुञ्च दारीकाम् ।

स्मयन् कृष्णो धनुश् छित्त्वा षड्भिर् विव्याध रुक्मिणम् ॥

yāvan na me hato bāṇaiḥ śayīthā muñca dārīkām / smayan kṛṣṇo dhanuś chittvā ṣaḍbhir vivyādha rukmiṇam //

“Before you fall by my arrows, lie down—release the maiden!” Thus he shouted. But smiling, Kṛṣṇa cut his bow and then pierced Rukmī with six arrows.

This verse contrasts boastful aggression with the Lord’s serene mastery. Rukmī threatens Kṛṣṇa, demanding that He “release the maiden,” treating Rukmiṇī as an object to be seized and returned. Such language reflects adharma: ignoring the maiden’s will and the higher principle that marriage and protection must align with consent and righteousness. Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s response is striking—He acts while smiling (smayan). In Bhagavata theology, the Lord is never forced into violence by passion; His actions are precise, controlled, and purposeful. First He cuts the bow—disarming the threat at its root—then He strikes with six arrows, asserting dominance without losing composure. The sequence teaches that true strength is not noisy; it is effective and measured. For devotees, this moment in Kṛṣṇa-līlā reinforces confidence that the Supreme protects dharma and His devotees. Even when confronted by prideful opponents, the Lord remains calm, and the outcome is certain: arrogance is checked, and righteousness prevails.
