Indra’s Prayers and the Coronation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa as Govinda
Govindābhiṣeka
त्वं न: परमकं दैवं त्वं न इन्द्रो जगत्पते । भवाय भव गोविप्रदेवानां ये च साधव: ॥ २० ॥
tvaṁ naḥ paramakaṁ daivaṁ tvaṁ na indro jagat-pate bhavāya bhava go-vipra devānāṁ ye ca sādhavaḥ
You are our supreme worshipable Deity; O Lord of the universe, You are our Indra. For the welfare of the cows, the brāhmaṇas, the devas, and all saintly souls, please become our Indra.
The Supreme Lord is self-sufficient: He can do everything Himself. The Lord appointed one of His innumerable children to the position of Indra, the lord of the cosmic heaven. But Indra abused his authority, and now Surabhi requests Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Absolute Truth, to directly become her Lord, her Indra. We should carefully perform our duties without false pride; thus we will not become obsolete and embarrassed, as in the present case of King Indra, who actually attacked Lord Kṛṣṇa and His Vṛndāvana devotees.
This verse declares that Kṛṣṇa Himself is the Vrajavāsīs’ true “Indra”—their supreme Lord and protector—showing that ultimate shelter is in Bhagavān, not in secondary controllers.
After Kṛṣṇa protected Vraja by lifting Govardhana Hill and Indra’s storm was checked, the residents recognized Kṛṣṇa as their highest deity and prayed for His continued guardianship of the righteous.
Support dharmic values by honoring and caring for cows (non-violence and sustenance), respecting genuine spiritual learning (vipra), and serving saintly persons—while keeping devotion to Kṛṣṇa as the center.
