Nārada Instructs the Pracetās: Bhakti as the Goal of All Paths
श्रुतेन तपसा वा किं वचोभिश्चित्तवृत्तिभि: । बुद्ध्या वा किं निपुणया बलेनेन्द्रियराधसा ॥ ११ ॥
śrutena tapasā vā kiṁ vacobhiś citta-vṛttibhiḥ buddhyā vā kiṁ nipuṇayā balenendriya-rādhasā
Without devotional service, what value are hearing, austerity, eloquence, mental speculation, refined intelligence, strength, and the power of the senses?
From the Upaniṣads ( Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 3.2.3) we learn:
This verse states that scholarship, austerity, eloquence, mental refinement, intelligence, and even sensory strength are ultimately of little value if they do not culminate in devotion to the Supreme Lord.
Lord Śiva was guiding the Pracetās toward the highest purpose of their practices—pure devotion—so they would not become proud of tapasya or distracted by secondary attainments.
Use education, discipline, and self-improvement as supports for devotion and character—regular prayer, chanting, service, and humility—rather than as ends that inflate ego or mere achievement.
