Satī Desires to Attend Dakṣa’s Sacrifice; Śiva Warns Against the Pain of Relatives’ Insults
saty uvāca prajāpates te śvaśurasya sāmprataṁ niryāpito yajña-mahotsavaḥ kila vayaṁ ca tatrābhisarāma vāma te yady arthitāmī vibudhā vrajanti hi
Satī said: My beloved Śiva, your father-in-law, Prajāpati, is now performing a great sacrificial festival, and all the demigods invited by him are going there. If you so desire, we too may go.
Satī knew of the tension between her father and her husband, but still she expressed to her husband, Lord Śiva, that since such sacrifices were going on at her father’s house and so many demigods were going, she also desired to go. But she could not express her willingness directly, and so she told her husband that if he desired to go, then she could also accompany him. In other words, she submitted her desire very politely to her husband.
This verse introduces that Dakṣa is conducting a grand sacrifice and that the demigods are attending by invitation, setting the stage for the Dakṣa–Śiva conflict.
Satī informs Śiva that her father Dakṣa is holding a major yajña and suggests they go too, especially since the demigods are invited and attending.
Before entering sensitive family or social situations, seek consent, understand the context, and recognize that social momentum (“others are going”) doesn’t always mean it is wise or safe.
