Mantra 1

दुःखनाशनम्। कर्शफस्य विशफस्य द्यौः पिता पृथिवी माता। यथाभिचक्र देवास्तथाप कृणुता पुनः

For the destruction of suffering: of Karśapha, of Viśapha—Heaven is father, Earth is mother. As the Gods once drave (the evil) back, so now do ye drive it away, and bring (the sufferer) back again to soundness.

Mantra 2

अश्रेष्माणो अधारयन् तथा तन्मनुना कृतम्। कृणोमि वध्रि विष्कन्धं मुष्काबर्हो गवामिव

They, being free from phlegm, held it in check—so was that wrought by Manu. I now effect (the like), O Vadhri: (I smite) Viṣkandha, as one (drives off) the muṣkābarha of cattle.

Mantra 3

पिशङ्गे सूत्रे खृगलं तदा बध्नन्ति वेधसः । श्रवस्युं शुष्मं काबवं वध्रिं कृण्वन्तु बन्धुरः

With tawny cord, with halter-thong, even then the wise bind fast. Let the Bandhuras make Kābava—his fame-seeking pride, his vehement force—an impotent wretch.

Mantra 4

येना श्रवस्यवश्चरथ देवा इवासुरमायया । शुनां कपिरिव दूषणो बन्धुरा काबवस्य च

Wherewith, ye fame-desirous, ye fare abroad like Gods, by Asura-craft: like a monkey among dogs, a spoiler—so, O Bandhuras—be ye, for Kābava also.

Mantra 5

दुष्ट्यै हि त्वा भत्स्यामि दूषयिष्यामि काबवम्। उदाशवो रथा इव शपथेभिः सरिष्यथ

For mischief verily will I revile thee; I will defile Kābava. Like chariots driven forth, with curses shall ye glide away, depart.

Mantra 6

एकशतं विष्कन्धानि विष्ठिता पृथिवीमनु । तेषां त्वामग्रे उज्जहरुर्मणिं विष्कन्धदूषणम्

A hundred are the viṣkandha-plagues, set fast throughout the Earth. From them they brought thee forth, in front—the amulet, spoiler of viṣkandha.

Because the rite is materially enacted: the tawny cord and halter-thong are treated as carriers of binding power, making the spoken intention ‘fastened’ and effective.
