patitaḥ patitāj jātaḥ klībaś cānaṃśāḥ jaḍonmattāndha-kuṣṭhinaś ca
A fallen person, one born of a fallen person, and an impotent person—these have no share; likewise the mentally deficient, the insane, the blind, and the leprous.
It reflects a capacity-and-status model of legal entitlement: the state channels control of property to those deemed socially legitimate and administratively “competent,” while handling maintenance separately.
