Related Themes: Agni Purana 219 (tīrtha enumeration continues)
It transmits tīrtha-vidyā: the authoritative naming/recitation of major pilgrimage sites (kṣetras and saṅgamas) associated with Viṣṇu and sacred waters, intended for pilgrimage planning and merit-bearing remembrance (tīrtha-smaraṇa).
By cataloging sacred places across regions (Dvārakā, Puruṣottama, Śālagrāma, river–ocean saṅgamas), it functions like a geographic-religious index—one of the Agni Purāṇa’s hallmark compendia sections alongside its ritual, polity, medicine, and literary topics.
Remembering and/or visiting these tīrthas is traditionally held to purify impurities (pāpa-kṣaya) and generate merit (puṇya), especially because the sites are linked to Viṣṇu-forms (Puruṣottama, Varāha) and sanctifying waters (saṅgama).
