The Sequence of the Second and Third Enclosure Worship (Āvaraṇa-pūjā)

Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Role: teaching
It presents a graded Shaiva map of spiritual approach: the second āvaraṇa is associated with the Vidyeśvaras (divine lords presiding over sacred knowledge), while the third āvaraṇa introduces a doctrinal or ontological distinction, emphasizing discernment (bheda) in understanding Shiva’s manifest order.
Āvaraṇa-teachings are commonly applied to Linga-upāsanā as layered contemplation: worship proceeds from outer forms and divine attendants/presiding powers (like Vidyeśvaras) toward subtler levels where differences of tattvas are analyzed, ultimately aiding concentration on Saguna Shiva as a doorway to the Supreme.
A practical takeaway is āvaraṇa-dhyāna during Linga-pūjā: mentally honor the second enclosure as Vidyeśvara-presided, then in the third practice viveka (discriminative contemplation) of the described distinctions while repeating the Panchakshara, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya.”
