(Nāradapraśna-varṇana) — “Account of Nārada’s Inquiry”

Suta Goswami (narrating to the sages at Naimisharanya)

Tattva Level: pati

Shiva Form: Mahādeva

Sthala Purana: Not tied to a Jyotirliṅga; introduces Śiva’s gaṇas as agents within sacred geography, often linked in Purāṇas to guarding kṣetras and administering boons/curses.

Significance: Highlights that divine attendants and unseen agencies operate around sacred sites; the devotee’s ‘divya-darśana’ suggests heightened receptivity gained through pilgrimage and devotion.

FAQs

It highlights the Shaiva ideal of approaching the divine (and the divine-minded) with sucitta—purity, calmness, and reverence—showing that nearness to Shiva is marked by inner disposition, not mere status or power.

The verse portrays Saguna Shiva’s sphere through His gaṇas: devotees draw near to Shiva through respectful approach, service, and receptivity—key attitudes in Linga worship where the mind is made pure before offering, japa, and darśana.

Cultivate sucitta through daily japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and a brief meditation before worship; the practical takeaway is to approach Shiva’s worship only after calming and purifying the mind.
