The Awakening of Kumbhakarna
धूपंसुगन्धांश्चससृजुस्तुष्टवुश्चपरन्ततम् ।।।।जलदाइवचानेदुर्यातुधानास्ततस्ततः ।
dhūpaṁ sugandhāṁś ca sasṛjus tuṣṭuvuś ca parantatam |
jaladā iva cānedur yātudhānās tatas tataḥ ||6.60.34||
Sie ließen wohlriechenden Weihrauch aufsteigen und priesen ihn; und die Yātudhānas brüllten von Ort zu Ort wie donnernde Wolken.
They also burnt incense, sandal to send forth fragrance to gratify Kumbhakarna and thundered like clouds here and there.
Noise, praise, and ritual can be instruments of manipulation. Dharma emphasizes truthful speech and right purpose; here, collective frenzy is used to propel a destructive agenda.
Incense is burned and loud acclamations are raised to awaken and energize Kumbhakarṇa.
The implied virtue is steadiness (dhṛti) and calm discernment, as opposed to mob-like agitation.
