Saumithri who was not depressed in spirit (by Ravana's attack) addressing Ravana who was stretching his bow said "Oh! Lord of night rangers, Be aware. You ought not to fight with vanaras."
Lakṣmaṇa asserts propriety in combat: a principal warrior should face an equal principal opponent; dharma includes fairness, protection of allies, and truthfully declaring one’s challenge.
Lakṣmaṇa intercepts Rāvaṇa and calls him to fight directly instead of targeting the Vānaras.
Courage joined with protective responsibility—Lakṣmaṇa offers himself to shield the Vānara forces.
