Hanuman Enters Lanka and Encounters Laṅkā-devatā
ततः कृत्वा महानादं सा वै लङ्का भयावहम्।तलेन वानरश्रेष्ठं ताडयामास वेगिता।।।।
tataḥ kṛtvā mahā-nādaṃ sā vai laṅkā bhayāvaham | talena vānara-śreṣṭhaṃ tāḍayāmāsa vegitā ||
Da erhob Laṅkā einen gewaltigen, furchterregenden Schrei und schlug in jäher Schnelle mit der Handfläche den vorzüglichsten der Affen.
Then the ogress of Lanka made a loud and frightening sound and struck the most powerful vanara with the palm of her hand.
The verse shows escalation from speech to force; dharma reflection centers on proportional response and the responsibility that comes with power.
The guardian Laṅkā initiates physical violence by slapping/striking Hanumān.
Hanumān’s forbearance is implied—he is attacked first, setting a dharmic frame for defensive action rather than aggression.
