Hanuman Enters Lanka and Encounters Laṅkā-devatā
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा लङ्का सा कामरूपिणी।भूय एव पुनर्वाक्यं बभाषे परुषाक्षरम्।।।।
tasya tad-vacanaṃ śrutvā laṅkā sā kāma-rūpiṇī | bhūya eva punar-vākyaṃ babhāṣe paruṣākṣaram ||
Als sie seine Worte hörte, sprach Laṅkā, die nach Belieben Gestalt annehmen konnte, erneut — nun jedoch mit harten Silben und schroffem Ton.
On hearing Hanuman, the ogress of Lanka, who could assume any form, replied in harsh words:
The verse contrasts disciplined speech with harsh speech; dharma emphasizes measured, truthful, and non-injurious language even amid confrontation.
Laṅkā-devatā responds to Hanumān’s stated intent and escalates the exchange by speaking harshly.
By implication, Hanumān’s composure is tested; the scene highlights the need for restraint when met with verbal aggression.
