Hanumān’s Survey of Rāvaṇa’s Inner Palace and Banquet Hall
तामपश्यन्कपिस्तत्र पश्यञ्श्चान्या परस्त्रियः।।5.11.46।।अपक्रम्य तदा वीरः प्रध्यातुमुपचक्रमे।
tām apaśyan kapiḥ tatra paśyaṃś cānyāḥ parastriyaḥ || 5.11.46 ||
apakramya tadā vīraḥ pradhyātum upacakrame |
Da er sie dort nicht sah, obgleich er andere Frauen erblickte, die einem anderen gehörten, trat der Affenheld beiseite und begann nachzusinnen.
The monkey leader saw thousands of beautiful women asleep after long dalliance. Some of them were adorned with ornaments, some were good at arguments and versed in the appreciation of songs, some were aware of the appropriate time and place and some were adept in right expressions.
Maryādā (ethical boundaries): even in a hostile palace, Hanuman is conscious of ‘parastrī’—others’ women—showing restraint and propriety while pursuing a righteous mission.
After failing to locate Sita among the women, Hanuman steps away to think and plan his next move.
Self-restraint (brahmacarya/saṃyama in conduct) and reflective intelligence (manana).
