Entry into the Chamber of Wrath
Kaikeyī’s Protest
yāvad āvartate cakraṃ tāvatī me vasundharā | prācīnās sindhu-sauvīrāḥ saurāṣṭrā dakṣiṇāpathāḥ | vaṅgāṅga-magadhā matsyāḥ samṛddhā kāśi-kosalāḥ ||
My authority on the land is extended till such places the wheel of any chariot rotates such as the regions in the east, SindhuSauvira areas, Saurashtra, Southern regions, Banga, Anga, Magadha states, Matsya kingdom and KasiKosala countries which are prosperous places.
The king’s dharma includes stewardship over diverse regions; power is meaningful only when aligned with protection and order.
This verse reiterates Daśaratha’s claim of wide dominion as he tries to calm Kaikeyī and invite her to state her desire.
Royal largesse and assurance—Daśaratha presents himself as capable of fulfilling requests within his rightful authority.
