Praise of Devotion to Viṣṇu

The Supremacy of Hari’s Name over All Tīrthas

Concept: Attachment to rewards (phala-gurutva) leads to downfall; therefore cultivate devotion to Hari and take exclusive refuge in Hari’s name.

Application: Perform duties and even religious acts without transactional obsession; prioritize daily Hari-nāma (japa/kīrtana) and examine motives behind ‘spiritual’ actions.

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A devotee stands at a crossroads: one path is lined with glittering trophies and heavy golden fruits that bend the branches downward, leading into a dark ravine marked by ominous smoke. The other path is simple and bright, strewn with tulasī leaves and lotus petals, where the devotee walks while chanting Hari’s name, a soft blue radiance forming a protective canopy.","primary_figures":["a Hari-bhakta chanting nāma","symbolic figures of reward-seekers","Hari (as distant guiding presence or sky-form)"],"setting":"Mythic crossroads landscape with a bright devotional path and a dark fruit-obsessed path; subtle temple silhouette on the horizon.","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["sky blue","antique gold","charcoal black","tulasī green","lotus pink"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: central devotee with japa-mālā walking toward a radiant Hari icon framed by gold leaf; the left side shows heavy golden fruits and ornate rewards pulling figures toward a dark naraka edge; embossed gold highlights on the ‘phala’ side contrasted with serene blue-gold radiance on the nāma side; rich reds/greens, traditional ornamentation.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: a poetic landscape with two winding paths, delicate trees bearing heavy fruit on one side and tulasī-lotus motifs on the other; the devotee’s face calm as he chants; cool palette with warm sunrise, refined naturalism and gentle moral symbolism.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: stylized bifurcated path composition, bold outlines; reward-seekers with exaggerated grasping hands on one side, nāma-chanter with serene eyes on the other; red/yellow/green pigments with a blue aura around the devotee, temple-wall symmetry.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: central Hari/Kṛṣṇa motif above, with a border of tulasī and lotus; lower register shows devotees in kīrtana moving toward the deity, while peripheral figures chase golden fruits; deep blues and gold, intricate floral borders, peacocks and cows near the devotional path."}

FAQs

It warns that obsessive attachment to the fruits of action (karma-phala) can lead to spiritual downfall, described here as falling into severe hellish states.

It prescribes devotion to Hari and wholehearted reliance on Hari’s name (harināma) as the corrective path, shifting focus from reward-seeking to loving devotion.

Act without fixation on personal gain; cultivate devotion and remembrance of the Divine, so that duty is performed with purity rather than transactional desire.
