Prayaga-mahatmya
Glory of Prayaga and the Magha Bath at Triveni
प्रयागं स्मरमाणोऽपि यस्तु प्राणान्परित्यजेत् । ब्रह्मलोकमवाप्नोति मही यत्र हिरण्मयी ॥ १७० ॥
prayāgaṃ smaramāṇo'pi yastu prāṇānparityajet | brahmalokamavāpnoti mahī yatra hiraṇmayī || 170 ||
Selbst wer im Augenblick des Todes nur an Prayāga denkt—und dann den Lebenshauch aufgibt—gelangt nach Brahmaloka, in das strahlende Reich, wo selbst die Erde golden ist.
Narada (teaching in the Prayaga Mahatmya context)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It teaches that Prayāga’s sanctity is so powerful that even remembrance (smṛti) of it at life’s end grants an exalted post-death destination—Brahmaloka—highlighting tirtha-mahātmyas as vehicles of punya and upliftment.
By emphasizing remembrance, it aligns with bhakti’s core practice of smaraṇa—holding a sacred locus (and by extension the Divine associated with it) in mind—showing that inner devotion can bear fruit even without physical travel.
The verse primarily reflects dharma and tirtha-vidhi rather than a specific Vedāṅga; practically, it underscores smṛti as an applied discipline (anusmaraṇa) used in vrata, pilgrimage traditions, and end-of-life sacred recollection practices.
