Mārkaṇḍeya-varṇanam
The Description of Mārkaṇḍeya
ye'bhinandanti nāmāni hareḥ śrutvā'tiharṣitāḥ | romāñcitaśarīrāśca te vai bhāgavatottamāḥ || 64 ||
Sanatkumara (teaching Narada in the Bhakti dialogue context)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
It identifies the hallmark of the highest devotee: spontaneous, embodied joy and reverence when hearing Hari’s names, showing that devotion has become natural and deeply internalized.
It centers Bhakti on śravaṇa (hearing) of Hari-nāma and the devotee’s heartfelt response—praise, delight, and sattvika-bhāvas—indicating that genuine devotion is measured by transformation of consciousness and emotion, not mere outward display.
Primarily Śikṣā (proper recitation/hearing of sacred sound) and Vyākaraṇa in a supportive sense—valuing the precise utterance and reception of Hari-nāma—though the verse’s main thrust is devotional practice rather than technical instruction.
